DIFFERENTIATED SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION

Reading First Pa

Schools are adapting to an increasingly broad range of learners. More than ever, teachers must deliver instruction to meet the needs of these academically diverse students. Without differentiated small group reading instruction, some children will fall further behind, while others will be left unchallenged. Differentiated small group reading instruction allows the teacher to address the needs of beginning and struggling readers in the regular classroom.

Periodic progress monitoring of student performance in conjunction with analysis of assessment data enables the teacher to form flexible small groups reflective of student needs. The use of flexible groups has been supported for students of all ability levels, including gifted students and students with identified learning disabilities. Research has found small group instruction to be correlated with increased reading outcomes.

The International Reading Association identifies the following elements that support the success of the Differentiated Small Group Reading Model:

  • Every group of students is given quality reading instruction and tasks that are worthwhile, valuable, and matched to students' instructional level.
  • Assessment is ongoing and directly linked to instruction.
  • Components of the model work interactively, building on and supporting one another.
